Reversible Cat Bag

When I created this blog a few days ago, my thought was that I would try to complete a quilt a week starting in 2022. It might be a little ambitious, but shoot for the moon, right?

This loosely connects back to a "bucket list" item that I have daydreamed about before: Building up enough stock to participate in a craft show or open up a small shop on Etsy. The thought makes me a little nervous, because I always wonder if my finished products are good enough. I like simple designs and things that I can make fast. If I take on projects that are likely to last more than a week, their likelihood of completion tends to dwindle. (For example, I started a queen sized quilt for my sister the year before she graduated for high school. In 2014.)

Anyway, the project of the day was a reversible bag for my cousin. It is fitting that my first post be about a gift for her, because she supported me heavily in starting this hobby. She helped me set up my machine, advised me on colors and patterns for my first projects, and taught me how to baste, bind, and finish my first quilt. I wouldn't even be embarking on this blog without her.

I had it in mind that I wanted to make something for her, because she comes up with the most thoughtful handmade gifts for special occasions. However, as you might have gathered, my self confidence in this arena is not high, and she is good. Like, really good. Anything that I make for her, she can make for herself, probably better and with creative details that I can dream up, but not currently execute. So I left the house today to go get a giftcard to Joann Fabric so that I can fund her hobby.

One does not simply go to J-Fab (another thing I picked up from cuz, she worked there for a few years to boot) and not look at fabric. It just doesn't happen. So as I am perusing the goods, I come across a fabric that basically screamed at me.

Cats, glasses, balls of yarn (which I am sure were for the cat, but my cousin made crochet blankets for all of my kids)... it's like it was made for her! After grabbing the bolt and almost immediately finding a suitable coordinating fabric, and I am making my way to the cutting table knowing how I am going to spend my afternoon.

As I was standing at the cutting counter I did a Google search and had another stroke of luck. The first search result that came up was a reversible bag from Very Purple Person (click on the link to see the artist and pattern). I saved the search for when I could get to my printer.

When I got home my whole idea was nearly derailed by a rogue printer, but hubby got that fixed fast for me! I had to read the tutorial and look at pictures several times before everything sunk in (which is the usual for me). This is my first bag, and I believe my first reversible item. It is also the first time that I did a dart!

I am excited to give this to her. Inwardly I am rolling my eyes at myself for being such a procrastinator, but sometimes things just work out!
